Circumcision Aftercare Instructions

After the circumcision, you will find that the glans or head of the penis will be beefy red in color and moist. The area immediately behind the glans will be quite swollen for several days. In the next week, small yellowish-white firm plaques, moist crusts, or a whitish filmy material may occur near the wound or head of the penis. This plaque formation is normal and will eventually disappear so please do not try to scrub it off. 1. When the baby urinates, simply change the diaper. Washing is not necessary. The baby will not experience pain with urination. 2. If the penis gets soiled with stool, gently wash the area with both a soft cotton cloth and warm water or a clean spray bottle with warm water. Avoid wipes as they may sting. 3. With each diaper change, apply generous amounts of Vaseline around the head of the penis and on the diaper where it touches the penis in order to avoid the head of the penis from sticking to the diaper or his skin. Continue using Vaseline for 2-3 days after the circumcision. There is no need to continue the Vaseline for more than 3 days. If a plastibell procedure is performed, only apply Vaseline for one day. The plastibell falls off on its own approximately three to five days after the procedure. There are no concerns if it falls off sooner, unless there is bleeding. Please call our office if the plastibell has not fallen off by the tenth day after the procedure. 4. It is normal to see some spots of blood on the inside of the diaper for the first 2-3 days after the circumcision. If the penis is oozing blood, please call our office or after hours service at 367-4321. 5. Avoid fully bathing your baby until the wound has completely healed (approximately 7 days), and then only if the umbilical cord has fallen off and the navel has healed. 6. If the baby is irritable you may give him one single dose of 1.25ml of Infant Tylenol-New Concentration (160mg/5ml) or 0.4ml of Infant Tylenol-Old Concentration (80mg/0.8ml). Do not give any additional doses of Tylenol. 7. Please feel free to call me at any time with further questions or problems.
